The Titusville Police Department’s non-emergency number was recently unlawfully used to solicit personal information and money by members of a fraudulent scamming operation via a phone number caller ID spoofing application.
The Titusville Police Department does not call and ask anyone for personal information, banking information, solicit means to remove a person from jail via payments or disseminate information pertaining to arrest warrants over the phone.
Phone number spoofing occurs when someone disguises their real phone number by hiding behind someone else’s phone number, which displays on the phone screen, to make calls. These calls are most likely scam calls. Scammers spoof phone numbers that are recognized as local or similar to phone numbers that are used often by the victim.
Never give personal information or banking information to anyone over the phone. Beware, the scammer will say anything to make the victim believe they are a legitimate legal operation.
Protect yourself from scammers by never answering a phone call from a number you don’t know, and never call a number you don’t know back if you missed the phone call and they didn’t leave a voicemail message.
Titusville community members can report a loss as a result of phone scamming by calling (321) 264-7800.
